The Northeast of Brazil was in the 17th century for a short period a colony of the Dutch West India Company. In this article mr. Paul Russell and mr. drs. Reinier W.L. Russell, the Honorary Consul of Brazil in Amsterdam, depict both the legal organisation and the existing law of the colony on the basis of the most important charters, rules and regulations. As lawyers and procurators, they pay special attention to several guidelines for these professions. In doing so they fill in a striking lacuna not only in the history of Dutch Brazil but also in the Dutch legal history.

The original English version of this article was published in 2010 in Ius Romanum, Ius Commune, Ius Hodiernum, the liber amicorum published on the occasion of the retirement of our adviser Professor E. J.H. Schrage from the University of Amsterdam where he taught the Principles of Private Law. The article was illustrated by Jet Nijkamp.

The Dutch version of this article containing the original text of two important historical documents can also be consulted on this site.
